Why is Selecting the Simplest Hypothesis (Consistent with Data) a Good Idea? A Simple Explanation

چکیده
\Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." A. Einstein, Autobiographical Notes 3] When there are several diierent hypotheses that can explain an observed phenomenon, which of these hypotheses should we choose? Occam, a well known 13th century philosopher, was the rst to formulate a natural idea: choose the simplest of these hypotheses. This principle has been successfully used in many areas of science. Occam's principle works very well: why? In many cases, this Occam's principle is in good accordance with common sense. For example , when we observe that the amount N t of the radioactive material decays exponentially with time t { i.e., that for some constant , we have N t = exp(? t) for t = 1; 2; : : : ; T { then it is natural to select the hypothesis that N t = exp(? t) for all t, although from the purely mathematical viewpoint, a hypothesis that, say, N t = exp(? t) for t T and N t = cos(ln(t)) for t > T would be also equally good in explaining all the data.

A Simple Geometric Explanation of Occam’s Razor
Occam’s razor states that out of possible explanations, plans, and designs, we should select the simplest one. It turns out that in many practical situations, the simplest explanation indeed turns out to be the correct one, the simplest plan is often the most successful, etc. But why this happens is not very clear. In this paper, we provide a simple geometric explanation of Occam’s razor. 1 For...
متن کاملEffect of Object Location on Selecting the Limb in Unilateral Reaching in 5- to 6-Year-Old Children
Purpose: The traditional view regards limb selection in reaching a hemispheric specialization and an permanent biological phenomenon. However, recent studies have questioned this idea. Instead, they suggest that the task conditions is also an effective factor. The present study includes two experiments in right and left handed children examining the effect of object location as a task condition...
متن کاملAn Efficient Genetic Algorithm for Task Scheduling on Heterogeneous Computing Systems Based on TRIZ
An efficient assignment and scheduling of tasks is one of the key elements in effective utilization of heterogeneous multiprocessor systems. The task scheduling problem has been proven to be NP-hard is the reason why we used meta-heuristic methods for finding a suboptimal schedule. In this paper we proposed a new approach using TRIZ (specially 40 inventive principles). The basic idea of thi...

متن کاملEfficient Computing Budget Allocation for Finding Simplest Good Designs.
In many applications some designs are easier to implement, require less training data and shorter training time, and consume less storage than the others. Such designs are called simple designs, and are usually preferred over complex ones when they all have good performance. Despite the abundant existing studies on how to find good designs in simulation-based optimization (SBO), there exist few...
